Halton Region's Waste Management Division provides comprehensive waste services to approximately 600,000 residents across its four local municipalities: Burlington, Halton Hills, Milton, and Oakville. The division offers harmonized curbside collection of organics, garbage, recyclables, yard waste, bulk waste and metal and application collection. Halton Region Waste Management owns and operates the Halton Waste Management Site (HWMS) in Milton, which serves as a central hub for waste diversion and disposal – it is the last operating municipal landfill in the GTA!
Halton has achieved a 58% diversion rate, keeping over 132,000 tonnes of waste out of landfills in 2024 alone. These efforts have extended the landfill’s lifespan from originally a 20-year lifespan to over 60 years and counting.
Looking ahead, Halton’s Solid Waste Management Strategy aims to increase the diversion rate to 65% by 2030. Key targets include diverting an additional 5–11% of waste, extending landfill capacity, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 13,020 tonnes annually. Through these services and strategic initiatives, Halton Region Waste Management is committed to fostering a sustainable, environmentally responsible community.
